Xgen Description and Collection Setup

 

Open up XGEN gui

Create a XGen description that uses groomable splines or regular splines;

Guide Setup

Add in Guides onto surface. Pick ‘Add or Move Guides’ from menu icon and click onto surface

Adjust points on custom guides.

Increase volume of hair using Density under Primitives tab

When doing initial setup with guides adjust percent under preview/output to lower number.

Preview set at 10%

Shader Setup

In the XGen window → Preview / Output tab → Custom Shader Parameters section, add a color “rootcolor” attribute and a color “tipcolor” attribute;

Click on the Expression button next to ‘rootcolor’ and ‘tipcolor’ attributes, and pick Load Expression → Library → Sample, which sets the gadget to a regular color picker;
Set rootcolor and tipcolor colors;

Assign a 3Delight Hair shader to the XGen description node;
Have the 3Delight Hair shader retrieve the root & tip colors by using a renderman code node/

Create a RenderMan Code node (under Maya Utilities);CaptureB

 

 

Click the editor button for Shading Parameters and add:

Edit the Shading Code to contain:

Connect the RenderMan Code’s outColor plug to the 3Delight Hair Shader color attr.

Taper 0.7
Taper Start 0.3
density 100

width 0.6

Adjust length of guide curves with Length with expression

Under Modifiers I added in clumping and noise.
Adjusted ramp for where to have it stronger between roots and tips.
